Race Report Northern MTB XC Championships – Aske (N. Yorks)

Here's another great race report from Maddi Smith, this time the Northern MTB CX Championships in Aske.

– And then there were two… just to prove that there is still some off road activity in the club. This course is to be used in a couple of weeks for the National MTB XC Championships and as such attracted some serious riders who wanted a preview.

The Bank Holiday weekend diminished Green & Black participation this year but Michael Leaney and I had a crack. Sadly Graham Whiting was unable to enter this race to defend his Northern XC Veteran Championship title as he is still recovering from injury (Get well soon Graham). Alex Whiting and Jason Marriott had other commitments (On bikes I believe so we’ll let you off). Looking forward to getting the whole team back together again.

The course was dry, dusty, rooty and with significant loose rocks and rock gardens. There were some serious hills throughout. Both of our races were extremely short for a MTB race. The Male Grand Vets race was about 60mins and the Veteran Female 45mins. As we are training for National level races at 90mins this did challenge the lungs and legs.

There were the usual A/B Line options (1 steep drop off) but nothing too scary and we coped with these adequately although each of us admitted to making the odd mistake here and there.

In the end Mike had a great ride by taking the 5th Grand Vet spot and I defended the 1st place title I won last year… by just a few seconds. Had to work hard throughout. By eck that was tight! Now looking forward to next Saturday at Cannock for the Mids XC race. Hopefully there will be a few other G&Bs out then.

Finally thank you to Sharon McCarthy, Bogey & Sprocket for supporting us. It was cold for you three.
